Jessie J task

Representing music videos case study

Jessie J is signed to Island records since 2010. Working with the likes of Chris Brown and Miley Cyrus, Jessie J was well known in the USA. She then moved on to make her first single 'Do It Like A Dude' which successfully reached number two in the UK charts.

The video for 'Do It Like A Dude' featured Jessie J dancing with a lot of female and male back up dancers.
The video is based in an underground party where the actors are gambling, smoking, people of the same sex are making out and taking drugs.
This does not show a great image of Jessie J as she will look like a bad influence. This is the reason why some of her audience/fans have been put off by the video and see the star Jessie J in a different light. This song made number 2 in the UK charts so it was a hit in the UK, but it has not been successful enough to reach worldwide, this still hasn't stopped the video hitting 64 million facebook views.

After seeing her not so successful outcome of the first single Jessie J then brought out a second single 'Price Tag' featuring world wide artist B.o.B. Was the video for this song this her way of increasing her recognition? Already having a major featured artist, this song is very different from the first single.

We can already see from the beginning of the video that it is more of a bright background and her dress sense is a lot different  'Do It Like A Dude.' The video starts off with a teddy bear and a little girl who grows up to be Jessie J.This is already portraying more of a feminine side to her, and helps the audience relate to her personally.
There are many things from both videos where we can see a lot of differences. 'Price Tag' shows a lot of ways where Jessie J tries to win her fans back and show to the audience she isn't really the person everyone thinks she is, but maybe she was just trying to connect the lyrics to the music video in 'Do It Like A Dude?'
One of the ways we can see she is trying to make a change to her iconography is her lipstick. It is is little things like these where the main differences are being shown. In the video for ' Do It Like A Dude' she is wearing dark lipstick with sharp studs to show her manly image. Whereas in the 'Price Tag' video she is wearing lighter lipstick with more of the glittery look to it. This is showing a feminine side to her. Another area in the video where we can spot a difference to the videos is the fact that in the first single her voice had more of the manly tone whereas in 'Price Tag' her voice has more of a soft tone to it.

Altogether we can see that Jessie J is trying to win her audience back and she has achieved that also by featuring another artist on the song.

One Direction

One Direction are a group of 5 individuals who are classed as a British boy band. They were in the seventh series of UK's talent show X Factor. They are now signed to Simon Cowell's record label Syco Records. They were also subsequently signed in America under Columbia Records.

This is one of their new videos called 'Live While We're Young.' In this video the band have reached 96 million views altogether within the space of a month!
The video is set in a sort of camping site where there are a lot of teens having a lot of fun. This portrays their age showing that they're teenagers. There is also a lot of partying going on throughout the day. The message of their song is implying that they want to live while they're young and before they reach the age where they have to start settling down. The main target audience for this video is teenagers. The song has also had a lot of commercial success, reaching the top 10 in 15 countries and having good feedback from the music critics.

Altogether we can see that in this video they are trying to show that they are young and they want to live it up while they have the time to.

This is the latest single that has been brought out from One Direction called 'Little Things'. The song was written by British singer Ed Sheeran and was originally meant to be for Ed Sheeran's last album and he thought he would give it to the band to see if they like it for themselves. There are many differences between this and their last single 'Live While We're Young.'

We can already see this from the setting of the video that they're in a recording studio. Whereas in the their last video it was set on a camping site. This video is also in black and white, this shows their maturity and they are portraying themselves as older men and not teens as everyone sees them.

Another difference we can see in this video is the tone of the music it's as if they have placed their song in a different genre. In 'Live While We're Young' it is more of a pop song whereas in 'Little Things' it is as if they're singing a poem rather than an actual song.  In the last video we saw that they use a variety of hand claps and electric guitar riffs. In 'Little Things' it's more just the one guitar and themselves singing, a bit like an acapella. This video was also filmed whilst recording the actual song this is totally different from what One Direction usually do with their music and a lot of other artists. In this video they are talking specifically about one girl whereas in the last single it was all about living their life and not really portraying their attention to a girl. This shows that they are more mature and maybe showing their elder generation audience what they are actually like besides what people think of them.

Altogether we can see that One Direction are showing a totally different view of themselves. This is maybe showing that their upcoming songs will be more like this? Or maybe they're showing that they do have a serious role and it isn't always songs about them living the life everyone sees them living?
