Mr Kemp....The final blog

This is the video of 'The Little Beggar' which i have taken and added sounds onto. I will be talking about each scene and which sounds i have used throughout the video.

This is the beginning of the clip where we see there are footsteps and the title of the clip. For this scene i have particularly added foot step sounds to make it realistic. I had to copy each sound twice to get the exact sounds of the footsteps. I have also added these footsteps throughout most of the video.

In the next part of the clip there is a bottle on the ground which has been kicked by the beggar. I have outlined where the bottle is to make it more clearer. I have used a glass smashing sound effect to get the bottle effect and make it realistic.

This is now the next scene of the clip and for this i have thought carefully about which sound i am going to add onto it. As we can see from this screenshot that it is a open space tunnel so if there is a footstep there will be an echo to back up that sound. So for this scene i have chosen to make a traffic noise so we can hear cars driving passed and mainly natural sounds. I have also added the footsteps in this scene to make it seem as though the beggar is coming down this way.

For these three parts of the clip i have chosen to do the footsteps and a siren noise. The reason why i have chosen the siren noise is because in the second screen shot out of the three we can see its showing a abandoned area where there's graffiti on the walls and so on. Another reason as to why i added on the sirens is because it brings a sense of fear and mystery into the clip and makes the audience to keep watching and think of what is going to happen next.

All of a sudden the genre of the clio changes and it turns into something else which is totally different compared to what we were watching and also the beggar is removed, but there is still that element of the same setting as we can see the graffiti on the wall.
I have added a mysterious violin sound to make it seem as if it was still carrying on with that mystery from the last clips.

Throughout this clip we can see that it is a non diegetic sound that is being used where i have added mood music and sound affects to make it sound that extra bit dramatic.

Audiobook Analysis

There are different types of audiobooks that you can purchase such as:
  1. You can get audiobooks on compact discs (Cds) there are many advantages and disadvantages of  compact disks. The advantages are that you can hear them on high quality sounds and they can also be played on dvds. The disadvantages of having compact disks are that they can scratch easily, there are sometimes multiple cd's for different audio chapters.
     2.  Another way of getting audiobooks is through audio cassettes. This dates back to history when audiobooks were available in in the 1960's recorded on to radio cassettes. The advantages of using radio cassettes are that they can be used in older cars , and they are also not very expensive. The disadvantages in radio cassettes are that they can be damaged very easily.

You can purchase physical audiobooks online and in stores. There are a large target audience for audiobooks and it appeals to many students. Students can multi task by using the audiobooks on their ipods or their smart phones. Another target audience for audiobooks are many readers. The readers who have not got time to read a book can also enjoy their time reading whilst driving and listening to the audiobook. There are so many people who still reminisce the days when they were a child and they had books being read to them, so audiobooks seems right for them as they have something being read out to them and also the fact that some of these audiobooks are read out by the authors themselves enjoys the readers time. People who have families to look after and are mainly busy throughout the day can enjoy a few minutes to themselves by listening to the audiobooks.
You can purchase audiobooks from iTunes and also websites such as audible. Many would say iTunes is the best place to purchase an audiobook if you are not one to worry about money, but they will give the best quality audiobooks. From the online website audible which is run by Amazon most audiobooks start from the prices of £3.99.

This is a piece of text from the website Audible.com that shows one of their offers of where you can pay monthly. This is a great for the people who enjoy listening to audiobooks most of the time.

Another retailer from audiobooks is random house who have over 500 of the most popular audiobooks and new titles are added every month. We can see in this image on the pricing lit it says 'Get this for £3.99 a month' this is a cheaper option for the people who do not want to pay in one go you can pay a small fee monthly instead.
Other retailer shops such as WHSmith sell audiobooks from £15.

This is from the Wh Smith website showing the prices of the best selling audiobooks that are being sold.

Audiobooks\Audio guides are now used in many museums to make it easier for the public or tourists to get around the museum and learn more about what they are viewing. Audio guides have now become common internationally and is a great source of information in museums rather than having a tour guide which can mainly lead to bordem and not accurate information.Take for example the Tate use smart phones which have an app for their audio guides. They come at cheap prices from £3.50 which you can use for the whole day whilst at your stay in the Tate. The audio guide also delivers a range of different languages on the gide. This is suitable for tourists who will find it much easier to use!

Audio guides can really help out for people who have disabilities and dyslexia. it could give people that are blind a benefit of hearing the audio guide from the authors side and absorb it all in. This is great for the blind people as they can enjoy a good book. This also benefits people with dyslexia to learn about something independantly without being helped out by someone else. Audiobooks are also delivered in many different topics to suit many different people and their genres. Audiobooks have also been generally used in schools by teachers of second-language learners. In many cases audiobooks have been proven successful for students to access literature and enjoy books.

In conclusion we can see that different audiobooks have different audiences same as different books having different audiences. We can also see that audiobooks from the adult range has more of a higher price rather than kids audiobooks. In todays digital world i believe that audiobooks are very helpful and much more portable as you can download them onto you iPod or your smart phone. This is much better than carrying a book making it more less portable whilst with a device you can jus plug in your headphones and you're on the move whereas with books you can't walk and read at the same time. By looking at the research that i have we can see that spoken word recordings are growing by the day and will become much more useful in the future and will have much more of a wider audience.

Sound pictures

This is the area we made the whistle noise. As you can see from the photo sound from Mustafa's mouth is being bounced off the wall making a hollow noise from all around the room making an echo at the end of the whistle tone. These set of staircases are blocked off with two doors both upstairs and downstairs which are close so all the noise is trapped, with the ceiling being high up there is more sound available to travel around the atmosphere to create more of an acoustic and hollow sound which can be heard from afar and also which travels straight to the sound recorder.

We can see in this picture that it is more of a closed boxed room. The sounds from the voice are heading directly to the voice recorder. Having a limited space of the voice to be around. In the recording you can hear an echo of the sound due to the hollow room. The room size also had an impact on the sound recording. The room was a small studio room with objects inside such as chairs, tables, a mini studio and also a mirror, although the walls of the room are strong which traps all the sound inside rather than it being more hollow and creating more of an echo noise.

We chose this location for the football sounds as it was an open space and we could test the sounds from the outside. Theres a shelter off the wall where the sound will be bouncing off into the recorder. The results that we got from this are that we can hear the sounds everywhere. The wall brings out a hollow sound when the ball is hit against it. The buildings around it are fairly large building built with 2 floors so all the sound from the football is being reflected off it into the sound recorder making it more clear but hollow at the same time due to the fact that we are outdoors. Another reason as to why the sound is hollow is because the wall that the ball is being kicked against is the sports hall which is a empty hollow room reflecting a lot of sound.

We placed the sound recorder secretly in the room and recorded all the sound from the whole scale of the room. The reason as to why we hid the sound recorder before recording is so that any of the people in there would not react differently by knowing they are being recorded. We also hid the recorder into our jacket pocket so the sound that comes out will come out more softer and quieter. Even with the sound recorder being placed in a jacket pocket the sound was still a slight bit loud due to the way everyone was speaking in the room. The room is a boxed room with windows that are covered by blinds so no outside sound is being entered into the room, this helped our sound to only capture what was going on in the room.

The reason why we chose these shoes for the footsteps is so because they have flat soles and they would make more of a tapping noise on the floor. We recorded the footsteps from the end of the passage way making its way up building up the noise by each step its taking. We can see that sounds can also be bounced off from the surrounding walls. On the left hand side there is open space so that the sounds can be escaping from the passage way.

In this image we can see that sound can be open everywhere as there is a lot of open space available. Also the sound from the pub and buildings bounce off to opposite directions. There are also sounds from the cars on the road. The area is also built up around a lot of buildings which the sound can reflect off, at the time the photo was taken there was not many cars around but when the recording was taking place the road was busy with cars as usual.

We can see that in this photo that sound is being escaped from various places such as the motor garages mainly as shown in the image and also from the directions shown in the image. Sound is also entering from behind the sound recorder from where the image has been taken.

video conventions

This is the song from Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg and Akon called 'Kush'. We can see from the beginning of the video they have a mood/close-up shot of Dr Dre in the car with the lighter. This already shows the audience what the song is going to be about. Within the first 10 seconds the setting of the video changes into a location shot. This is already showing two shots they have already set up, there may be many more to come throughout the video.

This is another close up shot from the video of Snoop dogg. This close up/mood shot portrays his facial expressions and gets a clear image of the star himself at that particular moment throughout the video.

This close up shot of the dj in the video has a purpose behind it. the headphones are Dr Dre's branded headphones. This close up shot promotes the brand as well.

This is the video from American rapper T.I. called 'Whatever you like' All through this video there are a  variety of location shots being used.

This is a great example of location shot from the video. The camera angle gets a great image of both of them and gets a clear image of the actual location they are in.

This is another example of a location shot. The reason as to why its a great location shot is because as well as having himself in the video it also has the cars in the background also shows his status and his wealth.

From the location we can see that T.I is selling himself and showing the high life that he lives and his status. In the background we can see that there is a party going on and the camera is focused on him showing that he is the main person everyone should be having their eyes on. Another way in how we can see that he is the main person is by the clothes that he is wearing. He has a nice shirt and also a pair of 'flashy' sunglasses. This music video will mainly been broadcasted in music channels such as MTV base, Flava and Kiss.

This is the music video from Snoop Dogg and artist Wiz Khalifa called 'French Inhale'. The reason as to why i have chosen this video is because throughout the video there a variety of pin up shots that are displayed even if it is mainly in the same setting.

This is the first pin up shot i have noticed in the video of Wiz Khalifa which is in the first 25 seconds of the video. The shot is aimed directly at the artitst's face so that we can get a clear image of how he is smoking and what the sing is about.

This is another shot of Wiz Khalifa as a main pin up shot. We can see that maybe the director has only focused on placing pin up shots in the video and not showing the rest of their body.

This is a pin up shot of the other artist that ids featured on the track Snoop Dogg. We can see that this another pin up shot.

This is a live performance from Chris Brown and various other artists that are featured in the song. Even when they are not making a music video they perform live in the concert and create a great buzz!

This is Chris Brown performing his part of the song on the stage. We can see that in this shot they are on stage and also there are backing dancers with him to follow the routine of the song and make that slight bit of excitement.

This is the point where the other featured artist Busta Rhymes comes into the stage to perform his verse. We can see in this shot that it is very busy and everyones eyes is on them. We can also see that there are many camera recording them at the same time. This is showing that they're getting a lot of publicity as well.

This is the music video from the singing sensation Olly Murs called 'Oh My Goodness'. The reason why i have chosen this video is because we can see many surprise shots been taken in this video.

This is a clear shot which i have spotted in the first 12 seconds of the video of a surprise shot. He was taken away by seeing a girl who has attracted him. It looks as if though it was not planned out and the camera caught him in the moment.

This is another shot where the camera has caught out Olly Murs in surprise. In a normal video we wouldn't see them being caught out like this. It is mainly all set up.

This is a great shot of a surprise shot. Not of the artist but of the girl that he is attracted to who also plays a main role in this video. Many other artists we see nowadays have their music videos all set out and will hardly catch them on a surprise shot. The fact that the director has chosen to show Olly Murs like this is a smart way to show off his personality and he is not afraid to act himself in music videos. This can also show to the public that he isn't just the contestant that came of X Factor and hasn't done anything after leaving the contest, he has carried on doing his music and has become successful.

I will now talk about the pictures that i have taken of the 5 types of shots with my group and analyze them and talk about how it works with the photo.

This is one of the photos that was taken which was our candid shot. We have achieved this with the two people in my group Salman and Mustafa. We made it out so that it looks like they have no clue that a photo was being taken of them. This makes the photo better. If they acted like they knew  photo was being taken of them they would have acted differently towards the camera.

This is the shot we took of our live performance shot. I personally think this photo worked really well as we took the picture from behind of the fans listening to them. We also placed the singer on a table so that we can show that they have more of a higher status.

This is an example of a pin up shot. We can see in this picture we have only inserted the shoulders, face and arms and left out the rest of the body. The main purpose of this shot is that so we can get a clear image of the person themselves.

This is an example of my classmate Salman in the location shot. The reason why i would class this as the location shot and how it works is that we can see the setting of the place. He is clearly based on the table so we can get a clear image of where he is. In order for that we displayed the background and where he is sitting and also his whole body is displayed in the photo.

This is the image from another group which i really like and would class as the mood shot. The reason as to why i would class it the mood shot is because it shows the characters facial expressions and his style of music. The bandana which is used a prop is portraying his style in music and the way he is also leaning on the bench shows that he is more of a laid back and chilled out artist. This photo could also show off the artists personality as well.

Jessie J task

Representing music videos case study

Jessie J is signed to Island records since 2010. Working with the likes of Chris Brown and Miley Cyrus, Jessie J was well known in the USA. She then moved on to make her first single 'Do It Like A Dude' which successfully reached number two in the UK charts.

The video for 'Do It Like A Dude' featured Jessie J dancing with a lot of female and male back up dancers.
The video is based in an underground party where the actors are gambling, smoking, people of the same sex are making out and taking drugs.
This does not show a great image of Jessie J as she will look like a bad influence. This is the reason why some of her audience/fans have been put off by the video and see the star Jessie J in a different light. This song made number 2 in the UK charts so it was a hit in the UK, but it has not been successful enough to reach worldwide, this still hasn't stopped the video hitting 64 million facebook views.

After seeing her not so successful outcome of the first single Jessie J then brought out a second single 'Price Tag' featuring world wide artist B.o.B. Was the video for this song this her way of increasing her recognition? Already having a major featured artist, this song is very different from the first single.

We can already see from the beginning of the video that it is more of a bright background and her dress sense is a lot different  'Do It Like A Dude.' The video starts off with a teddy bear and a little girl who grows up to be Jessie J.This is already portraying more of a feminine side to her, and helps the audience relate to her personally.
There are many things from both videos where we can see a lot of differences. 'Price Tag' shows a lot of ways where Jessie J tries to win her fans back and show to the audience she isn't really the person everyone thinks she is, but maybe she was just trying to connect the lyrics to the music video in 'Do It Like A Dude?'
One of the ways we can see she is trying to make a change to her iconography is her lipstick. It is is little things like these where the main differences are being shown. In the video for ' Do It Like A Dude' she is wearing dark lipstick with sharp studs to show her manly image. Whereas in the 'Price Tag' video she is wearing lighter lipstick with more of the glittery look to it. This is showing a feminine side to her. Another area in the video where we can spot a difference to the videos is the fact that in the first single her voice had more of the manly tone whereas in 'Price Tag' her voice has more of a soft tone to it.

Altogether we can see that Jessie J is trying to win her audience back and she has achieved that also by featuring another artist on the song.

One Direction

One Direction are a group of 5 individuals who are classed as a British boy band. They were in the seventh series of UK's talent show X Factor. They are now signed to Simon Cowell's record label Syco Records. They were also subsequently signed in America under Columbia Records.

This is one of their new videos called 'Live While We're Young.' In this video the band have reached 96 million views altogether within the space of a month!
The video is set in a sort of camping site where there are a lot of teens having a lot of fun. This portrays their age showing that they're teenagers. There is also a lot of partying going on throughout the day. The message of their song is implying that they want to live while they're young and before they reach the age where they have to start settling down. The main target audience for this video is teenagers. The song has also had a lot of commercial success, reaching the top 10 in 15 countries and having good feedback from the music critics.

Altogether we can see that in this video they are trying to show that they are young and they want to live it up while they have the time to.

This is the latest single that has been brought out from One Direction called 'Little Things'. The song was written by British singer Ed Sheeran and was originally meant to be for Ed Sheeran's last album and he thought he would give it to the band to see if they like it for themselves. There are many differences between this and their last single 'Live While We're Young.'

We can already see this from the setting of the video that they're in a recording studio. Whereas in the their last video it was set on a camping site. This video is also in black and white, this shows their maturity and they are portraying themselves as older men and not teens as everyone sees them.

Another difference we can see in this video is the tone of the music it's as if they have placed their song in a different genre. In 'Live While We're Young' it is more of a pop song whereas in 'Little Things' it is as if they're singing a poem rather than an actual song.  In the last video we saw that they use a variety of hand claps and electric guitar riffs. In 'Little Things' it's more just the one guitar and themselves singing, a bit like an acapella. This video was also filmed whilst recording the actual song this is totally different from what One Direction usually do with their music and a lot of other artists. In this video they are talking specifically about one girl whereas in the last single it was all about living their life and not really portraying their attention to a girl. This shows that they are more mature and maybe showing their elder generation audience what they are actually like besides what people think of them.

Altogether we can see that One Direction are showing a totally different view of themselves. This is maybe showing that their upcoming songs will be more like this? Or maybe they're showing that they do have a serious role and it isn't always songs about them living the life everyone sees them living?

Goodwin's Theory

In 1992, Andrew Goodwin identified several codes and conventions which applied to the majority of music videos, they are:

Genre
Lyrics and visuals
Visuals connected to the music
Close up shots
Star image
Female characters sexualised
Intertextual References
Performance, narrative and concept

These theories are then explained :

Genre : The type of music the artist/artists are representing and also a style or category of music.

Lyrics and visuals: Goodwin's theory also consists of the idea that the lyrics and visuals are connected. We are seeing what we see in a music video and figuring if the video represents the lyrics in the song.

Close up shots: Goodwin believes there are a lot of close up shots used in music videos. The main purpose of this is to sell the artist to the viewers that are watching.

Star image/iconography: This is showing that the artists use music videos to present themselves and how they look to the viewers that are watching. For example artists such as Justin Timberlake are bringing a young, cool, look to his videos, he also shows iconography by dancing in his videos.

Female characters sexualised: The artists are using female characters to be sexualised in the videos to attract the viewers more to the video.

Intertextual References: This is when different artists use ideas from other music videos and place them in their own.

Performance, narrative and concept: Elements often included in music video. Narrative is where the artists are trying to tell a story with their music videos relating to the lyrics as well.

Altogether I agree with Andrew Goodwin's theories as I can see most of the theories being portrayed in the music videos. Although I can mostly see most of the theories being portrayed in the videos, there are some that i also disagree with such as:
Female characters sexualised. Not all videos portray this image. Different genres would not have this theory displayed, such as rock music or classical.
Lyrics and visuals: Not all videos relate to their lyrics. Some display a whole different video compared to the lyrics.

In this video of the old hip hop band 'Five' some of Goodwin's theories are being used such as : Lots of close up shots of the main artists. This is to show their individual personalities in the videos and to sell the performers to the viewers.
There is also iconography used in the video. We can see this throughout most of the video. The artists are dancing in the video to show off their image.
The visuals and lyrics are connected to the video. The song is called 'Let's Dance' and that is exactly what they are doing throughout the video.

This video of Conor Maynard's 'Turn Around' uses most of the conventions from Goodwin's theory.

Close up shots: There are lots of close up shots in this video of the main artist selling himself to the viewers.
Lyrics and Visuals being connected: The lyrics and videos are connected in the music video mostly.
Performance, narrative: This video tells a story to the viewers about the artist's own experiences, which also connects with the lyrics.
